In the end, the thousands of words on this web site, about design, construction and performance, can be"boiled down" to the following:
1) LENGTH IS THE KEY!!!! 2) THE KEY IS LENGTH!!!!
Unlike many products in common use today, which are, by necessity, highly complex, vessels such as "Spirit of The Bahamas" are extremely simple structures and therefore provide the longest (and best performing) vessel for the money. These vessels can be built at a low cost, in low tech, low cost facilities, by persons with basic "handyman" skills using the following "recipe".
INGREDIENTS
fiberglass, resin, glue, lumber, plywood, foam, fasteners, paint.
1. MAKE TWO LONG SKINNY BOXES. (as long as the budget will allow)
2. SHARPEN BOTH BOXES AT ONE END. (very, very sharp)
3. MAKE ONE FLAT BOX . (about twice as long as it is wide)
4. SHARPEN ONE END OF FLAT BOX . (not very sharp)
5. ATTACH FLAT BOX TO TOP OF SKINNY BOXES. (as in following drawing)
6. APPLY PAINT IN COLOR OF CHOICE.
7. ADD ENGINES OF CHOICE TO BLUNT ENDS OF SKINNY BOXES.
8. GARNISH WITH INGREDIENTS OF CHOICE. (electronics, furnishings, etc.)
9. ADD WATER, SIMMER GENTLY UNDER TROPICAL SUN ---- ENJOY .

Well, maybe it isn't quite that simple, but the point is that building a motor vessel, which perfoms halfway decently, is a much, much simpler task than building the vast majority of motor vessels today -- which perform very poorly indeed.
The basic configuration, proportions and, above all, length of a vessel are, by far, the most important factors in determining levels of performanc - whether for motor vessels or sailing vessels.
Some obscure design feature (which allows a multi million dollar America Cup boat to proceed around an inshore race course at 9.02 knots instead of 9.01 knots) may be hailed by the yachting press (and by the general press) as a major breakthrough. This hooplah seems a bit much - when catamarans, costing half as much are sailing around Cape Horn at three times the speed.
